Lack of leadership on Covid-19 return to play

How do we know our kids are safe to return to play? The federal government has failed to set standards nationally or follow the advice of the medical experts for return to play after Covid-19. They have preferred to let the states set those standards and guidelines. Unfortunately many of the state leadership is deferring to the local counties and city leaders to do the job for them. It is this kind of lack of leadership that places return to play in jeopardy and places our athletes in harm’s way. And all of us are watching the Covid-19 positive numbers rise and the prospects for a safe return dwindling each day.

The federal government and many states have been in such a rush to reopen the economy that they have put the health and safety of our students at risk. It is legitimate to question whether the push to reopen schools, restart sports is because it is safe or because it is impacting the economy and thus political support for our government leaders.

On Monday the Texas Medical Association shared a chart of common activities ranked by their chance of spreading the virus. It lists the following activities as high risk; working out at a gym and going to a sports stadium.

Moderately high risks include playing football, playing basketball and hugging or shaking hands. Those activities listed as moderate risk include; sending kids to school, day camp or child care, and swimming in a pool.

Activities at the lower end of risk include; playing tennis, playing golf, going to a library, staying at a hotel for two nights, walking in a busy downtown. Read more about the report here: https://www.newsweek.com/texas-doctors-rank-1-9-risks-catching-covid-19-these-activities-1515790
